The Museum Maximiano Lemos of History of Medicine owns a specialized library that is unique in the whole country. There are regular bibliographical and iconographical requests within and from outside the country. The main users are the students of Medicine and Dental Medicine of the Medical Schools of Porto, who acquire through the curricular program special knowledge and awareness about the medical heritage. The Museum and its library, as sources of medical-historical knowledge, allow the acquisition and structuring of the facts concerning History of Medicine.

Among the various existing periodicals and books, an enhance is put on the ancient book of National and International Medicine, of extraordinary historical value. The collection of medical and surgical instruments, devices and equipment represents an unlimited increase in value and usefulness, since it is one of the main sources of the research necessary to inventory each specimen of the museum. In this library we can find the historical archive of the Medical School of Porto, concerning admittances and exams of the students of Medicine and Surgery, Pharmacy and Deliveries. The library recently received the clinical patient archive from the service of medical practice. Some manuscripts of programs or studies produced by the teachers testify the scientific demand imposed to them and the existing pedagogical concerns. There is also an important archive of practical works produced by the students.
