The central corridor of the Museum Maximiano Lemos of History of Medicine, a space from which the exhibiting rooms opened, holds an important collection of the 19th century and current Portuguese art. The oil paintings of notable Professors of the Medical School of Porto are exhibited in their solemn academic clothes. What a diversity of remarkable men! Remembering the individual and collective life and work represents the most faithful and fair way of knowing the Medical School that they constructed and that exists nowadays. To the scientific and assistential legacies were often associated other of the same importance: the literary, the artistic and the one relating to the History of Medicine. Some important authors are present like António Carneiro (1872-1930), Columbano (1857-1929), Artur Loureiro (1853-1932), Acácio Lino (1878-1956), Júlio Costa (19th/20th century), Abel Salazar (1889-1946). The splendid oil painting of the main surgeon of the Kingdom Salustiano Arnauld (1775-1856) is present there as well. Both the official costumes and his decorations belong to the Museum. Professor Alberto de Sousa (1880-1961), Professor of Medicine and Fine Arts knew to represent at the highest level the human body anatomy. In "Lição de Anatomia" by Professor Alberto de Sousa, leaning over the suspended corpse, are represented some of the Professors of the Medical School of Porto and Santiago de Compostela. Among all, a special attention is given to the figure of the distinct Professor Hernâni Monteiro that seems to be orienting the lesson of Anatomy. Some of the busts of national and international notable men sculpted in marble or worked in plaster complete this gallery of notable men. Among them, it is worth to mention the figures of Professor Joaquim Guilherme Gomes Coelho (Júlio Dinis, 1839-1879), Alfredo de Magalhães (1870-1957), Magalhães Lemos (1855-1931) and Louis Pasteur (1822-1895).

There is a collection of medals allusive to medical meetings, social events and congresses commemorative of medical events or tribute events of National and International medical and scientific individualities that had contribute to the progress of Medicine. In these medals are remembered the Nobel Prizes of Medicine. The effigy of Professor Egas Moniz (1874-1955) Nobel Prize of Medicine in 1949, is exhibited among many others.
