![]() ![]() ![]() José Carlos Lopes Júnior (1838-1903), doctor in the University of Coimbra, demonstrating university professor and later substitute in the Medical Section of the Medical School of Porto (1863), occupying the university chair of Internal Pathology (1864), owner of the university chair of Physiology (1867-1870) and of Medical Matters (1879-1895), practising physician in Hospital of Santíssima Trindade, was considered an important fatherland bibliophilic.
In the Room Carlos Lopes instruments, devices and equipment of Gynecology and Obstetrics, Pediatrics and Urology are exhibited. Here you can find the iconography and documentation concerning these three subjects. Instruments of use in Medicine and Surgery, Gynecology and Obstetrics are present with emphasis to the collection of obstetrical forceps, Malmstrom's sucker and embryotomes. Models and Obstetrics books used in the teaching of this subject, an original delivery chair, and various copies from different chronological periods as well as a puerperium chair complete this subject's collection. A group of recipients aimed at transporting milk and milk bottles, offered by Professor Norberto Teixeira Santos (1932-1999), deserves notice. Among the Urology instruments shown we emphasize the bougies, the urethral probes and dilators, the urethrotomes and the lithotrity instruments. The specimens of each one of the subjects fit in one period before, contemporaneous to and after the introduction of antisepsis/asepsis. From the frank use of organic materials to build the instruments that were afterwards richly ornate, we start to see the instruments made of nickel-plated and chromium-plated steel, made of stainless steel and plastic with progressively simpler shapes.
