![]() ![]() ![]() Luís José de Pina Guimarães (1901-1972) graduated in the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Porto in 1927 and had his Ph.D. in the same Faculty in 1930. He was reconducted in the post of auxiliary Professor of the IV group (1936) and became full professor of History of Medicine and Professional Deontology in 1944. His teaching and scientific research activity concerned Anatomy and Physical Anthropology, Legal Medicine, Psychology and Psychiatry, but mostly History of Medicine and Professional Deontology. He published hundreds of original works. He founded and reactivated Medical Societies and research centers of undeniable value for national scientific progress. He was the first director of the Faculty of Literature (1961-1966), porveyor of the Santa Casa da Misericórdia (1953-1955), voting member of the committee of the administration of the city hall of Porto (1935-1937), mayor of Porto (1945-1949), vice-president of the regional council of the Medical Order (1942-1944), deputy of the Parliament (1938-1946) among others. His merit was recognized by national and international experts, he achieved high distinctions. Luís José de Pina Guimarães founded the Museum of History of Medicine Maximiano Lemos in the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Porto in 1933, he directed, coordinated and organized his transference in 1959/1960 to the current facilities in Asprela.
The Room Luís de Pina gathers the scientific, literary and artistic works of Professor Luís de Pina. Author of a vast medical bibliography, mostly related to the History of Medicine, he left the originals of his works to the Museum Maximiano Lemos, he had created himself. His various artistic potentialities in the form of drawings, caricatures and sculptures are represented there, although some are also exhibited in other rooms and in the specialized library of the museum. Professor Luís de Pina never forgot to render honor to the teachers of the Medical School of Porto who contributed the most to improve the medical-historical studies in Portugal. For this reason it felt right to exhibit the oil portraits and pictures of those Professors: Maximiano Lemos, Gouveia Osório, Pedro Dias, Carlos Lopes, João de Meira, Hernâni Monteiro and Maria Olívia Rúber de Meneses. In this room some pictures of Professor Luís de Pina concerning the multiple activities he performed are exhibited, as well as a caricature from Santana, representing Professor Luís de Pina when he was mayor of Porto (1945-1949), offered to him by his son, the sculptor Paulo Pina (deceased in 1993).
It is now correct to remind the notable character of the Medical School of Porto, Professor Hernâni Monteiro (1891-1963), represented in this room. The furniture and personal objects of his office, as well as his correspondence, his photographs, and large part of the literary works of Professor Hernâni Monteiro belong to the Museum Maximiano Lemos of History of Medicine. Professor Luís de Pina was much honored to receive such souvenirs from the missed Professor. He felt a very special esteem and respect for Professor Hernâni Monteiro, and felt thankful to the fact that this Professor had been "one of the most dedicated stimulators of the animation and implementation of the Museum of History of Medicine", in his words. Due to a lack of space, the Museum secretariat services are located in this room. ![]() |
