Hernâni Bastos Monteiro (1891-1963)
Professor Hernâni Monteiro assisted the Polytechnic Academy from 1907 to 1910. Afterwards he matriculated in the Medical School of Porto, still Medical-Surgical School. He graduated in October 1915, presenting the dissertation entitled
"Sífilis Hepática" (hepatic syphilis). From 1914 to 1918 he was the 1st temporary assistant of the 1st class (Descriptive and Topographical Anatomy), being responsible for the direction of the practical works. He was professor in charge of Topographical Anatomy from 1918 for a period of forty-three years. He submitted to public exams for 1st assistant of the Anatomy, Histology and Embryology group (April 1920). He became Ordinary Professor of the faculty for the Surgical Anatomy discipline (7-III-1924). He was the founder of the Experimental Surgery and Radiology Laboratories (1928) thanks to the enlargement of the faculty facilities and to the creation of the National Education Council. The first of these laboratories developed an important scientific production starting 1930, relating lymphangiography - world pioneers - (Álvaro Rodrigues, Sousa Pereira, Roberto de Carvalho under de direction of Hernâni Monteiro), inserted in the Portuguese Angiographic School of Egas Moniz and Reinaldo dos Santos. The works led in these laboratories regarding coronariography, organ transplantation, action of the sympathectomies, regeneration of the lymphatic vessels, consequences of the ganglionic draining, transplantability of lymphatic tissue where also important among others in the lymphatic anatomo-physiology area. Many experimental researches were led in these laboratories in the surgical and physiological area in collaboration with Professor Joaquim Bastos and Professor Afonso Guimarães.
The quality and productivity of this center led the Institute for High Culture to found a center for Studies of Experimental Medicine in the Faculty of Medicine of Porto under the direction of Professor Hernâni Monteiro (1940-1961). He was the founder of the Experimental Embryology and Teratology Laboratory. He showed particular in Radiological Anatomy (collaboration of Roberto de Carvalho and Albano Ramos). After the jubilation of Professor J.A. Pires de Lima (7-III-1947) he directed the Institute of Anatomy of the Faculty of Medicine of Porto. Appointed by the government of the technical Council for voting member of the Technical Commission for the construction of the Scholar Hospitals for Porto and Lisbon, he was also President of the Installation Commission of Hospital S. João, and actively participated in the verification of the execution of the construction project and of the equipment. He was Honorary Professor of the Faculty of Medicine of Santiago de Compostela (1944), and Doctor
Honoris Causa in Salamanca (1954). He soon evidenced a natural aptitude for the studies of Medical History, with special concern for the life and work of the Professors of the Medical School of Porto, as well as for the origin and evolution of the several services of the Faculty. His literary works, the cult of poetry, of music and art he led in his life are an evidence of his cultural and artistic education. He was the founder and a stimulating agent of the University Theatre of Porto (1948). He was member of the most trusted societies and academies of the specialty. He achieved several national and International distinction awards.
